Code Like a Girl! Sahana Leads the Way to Bring Women into FOSS at GHC 2010

From Sahana Software Foundation Director Louiqa Raschid:

With 2,147 attendees from over 29 countries, the Tenth Annual Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing in Atlanta, Georgia in September 2010, was very likely the largest gathering of technical women in the world.  The Sahana Software Foundation was honored to be asked to participate and to co-sponsor the culminating event, a Codeathon for Humanity. The Codeathon was organized by Avni Khatri and Jen Redman; Fran Boon, Pat Tressel and Louiqa Raschid represented Sahana at the event.  Pre-event planning included several globe spanning conference calls to train the 20+ facilitators who in turn were going to train the 150+ participants at the Codeathon.  Given the large number and diversity of the participants, and the very limited time (90+ minutes), the organizers had to be prepared for a variety of scenarios and needs.

Fran prepared some excellent introductory material and some simple tutorial exercises while Pat pulled together an impressive description of how participants could engage with Sahana, including documentation, user testing, bug finding, bug fixing and of course feature extension and new module development.

Things seemed to be proceeding fairly well until the participants tried to run their exercises. We realized that recent changes to the trunk had broken some critical parts of the code base that were being accessed by the exercise leading to the dreaded “bazaar pull” from all the tables.  Many of the participants stuck with us to the end of the Codeathon, expressed an interest in continuing to be engaged with open source and coding for good, and even persevered to commit a bug fix or two.

Avni Khatri wrote on the Open Source Track for the Grace Hopper Celebration on the Yahoo Developer Network.  Some great pictures were posted by Terriko on her blog.
